For this topic we offer 2 options: Option 1: Indoor Workshop: Preparing for the Schoolyard Safari This workshop prepares teachers and students for their own 'Schoolyard Safari'. We explore the kinds of mini-beasts and other wildlife you might find around your very own school, as well as the habitats that are featured there. We discuss where and how to look safely for wildlife, whilst also being mindful of their fragile existence around humans. This workshop also looks at safety and discusses which species should be avoided or handled with care. Trapping, collection and re-release techniques are also discussed as well as the basic care required for captured mini-beasts. Students are given an exciting hands-on experience with a variety of live harmless creatures, preserved specimens and biofacts. At every workshop, we exhibit a wide variety of live invertebrate mini-beasts including various large and colourful species of stick insects, giant burrowing cockroaches, preying mantis, millipedes, centipedes, crickets, mealworms, scorpions, spiders, beetles and more and allow supervised handling of harmless mini-beasts and over 200 preserved biofacts including embedded and dried insects, shells, starfish, corals, sponges, sea urchin, eggs, egg cases, skins, wings, cocoons etc.
Option 2: Outdoor Workshop: The Schoolyard Safari This workshop actually shows students where to find animals in and around their own school grounds. Students will learn how to:

Jacqui Love, the presenter, has over 20 years experience in this field, including 10 years as a keeper at Taronga Zoo. This program was the recipient of the Frater Award for Excellence within the NSW DET Performances for Schools Program in 2004 and 2006. Formats for this workshop are flexible depending upon the size of school grounds, numbers of students/classes to attend and weather on the day etc. A combination of the 2 options is recommended.
